plastic lighters from Midway Atoll

When the Oprah Show called looking for authentic marine debris samples, I immediately reached out to my contacts in the USFWS to see if we could get some materials they have collected from the beaches of Midway Atoll. While at one point they were looking for a pile of debis - as in a 40 foot shipping container of marine trash - but we sensibly scalled back and sent just a few boxes instead. Fish and Wildlife came through and we FedEx'd a box of the all-too-commmon plastic lighters, along with boxes of net and other plastic debris, just in time for the show. When so many consumer products reach the beaches of the world's most remote places, its time to take a hard look at how people wordwide dispose of presistant materials such as plastics.
